Maastricht University Medical Center – Center for Thyroid Carcinoma

Our centre for Thyroid Carcinoma is embedded in the Maastricht University Medical Center+ (MUMC+). The focus of the MUMC+ is on taking an integrated approach to health care: from prevention and basic care, to top-level clinical diagnostics and treatment. Patient safety is top priority in all of endeavours. The Maastricht UMC+ has 715 beds and approximately 7,000 employees and 4,000 students and is part of The Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centers (NFU). Patient care, teaching and research are closely intertwined and medical and technical capabilities are state-of-art.

Patients with thyroid carcinoma are treated by a dedicated and specialised team in a multidisciplinary tertiary referral setting. Our centre for Thyroid Carcinoma is coordinated by endocrinologists of the Division of Endocrinology and includes specialised neck surgeons, ENT surgeons, oncologists, nuclear medicine specialists, radiologists, and pathologists. Professionals of the departments of radiotherapy, clinical chemistry and genetics are also part of our team.

As a large tertiary referral centre in the most southern part of the Netherlands, collaborating with colleagues in the region (Limburg) has been essential. Together with our colleagues in the region (Limburg) we were able to further improve dedicated care for thyroid carcinoma patients by setting up a regional network, which is part of regional oncology network OncoZon, which in its turn is part of the Dutch Comprehensive Cancer Network. In addition, our close collaboration with the Aachen University Clinic, especially in the field of nuclear medicine, exemplifies our ‘Euregional’ approach in patient care. Since we are in close contact with patient organizations and plan to increasingly involve them in optimizing patient care, we believe the important aspects of quality of life as perceived by patients and/or their family will be better addressed in the future.
