Clinical exchange programme: From Kyiv to Pisa: bringing new expertise home

When Dr Valeriia Praporshchikova travelled from Kyiv, Ukraine, to the Obesity and Lipodystrophy Centre at Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Pisana in Italy, she had clear goals in mind. During her Endo-ERN Clinical Exchange, hosted by Professor Giovanni Ceccarini, she wanted to explore modern approaches to diagnosing and treating lipodystrophy, gain experience in managing severe obesity and disorders of glucose and insulin metabolism, observe how outpatient endocrine services are organised, and compare clinical practice in Italy and Ukraine.

Those objectives were matched by a rewarding experience. Valeriia completed all of her planned activities, gaining exposure to considerably more patients with rare endocrine diseases than would have been possible in her own hospital. Observing multidisciplinary teamwork, discussing complex cases and learning specialised procedures broadened both her clinical knowledge and her understanding of how different healthcare systems deliver care. “My exchange experience was inspiring both professionally and personally. It gave me the opportunity not only to deepen my knowledge in the field of rare endocrine diseases, but also to experience a different medical environment and build meaningful international connections.”

The exchange reinforced Valeriia’s commitment to sharing knowledge beyond her own practice. One of her original aims was to bring evidence-based approaches back to Ukraine by sharing what she learned with colleagues and helping improve patient care. Reflecting on the experience, she believes programmes like the Endo-ERN Clinical Exchange are invaluable for young specialists. “The possibility to observe multidisciplinary teamwork, discuss complex clinical cases, and experience different healthcare systems is extremely valuable.”
