Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation (NHS) Trust is a major teaching hospital of the University of Liverpool. It serves over 275,000 children, young people and their families. It is one of the busiest children’s hospitals in Europe and has all the paediatric disciplines under one roof. There are specialist paediatric support services in pharmacy and the allied health professions. We have a thriving research portfolio and a department of international child health. We are a centre of excellence for cancer, neurosurgery, cardiology, neurosurgery, trauma and endocrine care.
The Endocrine Unit at Alder Hey is one of two specialist centres providing a tertiary endocrine service to the hospitals within the northwest of England as well as being the secondary care endocrine service provider to the children of Liverpool. The service encompasses the full range of endocrine pathology in childhood, including a number of well-developed subspecialties. We are one of three designated centres of excellence for congenital hyperinsulinism for England. The team functions within a multidisciplinary team which has Europe’s first paediatric 3-T intraoperative MRI scanning capability for the management of pituitary, peri-chiasmatic, hypothalamic tumours and craniopharyngioma. The service for multiple endocrine neoplasia works closely with endocrine partners at our adult partner sites. We have a full multidisciplinary team working with children with disorders of sex development. The supporting services in radiology, pathology etc are outstanding with few equals in the United Kingdom. We work in close collaboration not only with our partners in the adult endocrine sector, but with our other paediatric partner service serving the northwest of England with regular meetings. We have a well-structured transitional service for moving young people with endocrine pathology to adult services at our partner sites in the adult sector.
